The Young Princes – 1930’s-1950’s


Guy & Kate met each other in art school at the California College of Arts & Crafts (CCAC) in Oakland, CA. Married in 1932, Guy Salisbury Prince (1904-1958) & Kate Overstreet (1908-1987), lived in Alameda, CA in the house of his father, John Rogers Prince Sr. (1859-1933) until the birth of their son Eugene Richey Prince (1933-2015) when they removed to Tuolumne, CA.

Theirs was a rocky relationship, marred by Guy’s erratic drinking problems, they bounced frequently from family seats in Tuolumne (the Princes) and Hollister (the Overstreets). In 1936 a second son was born, Ralph Everett Prince to them in Gilroy (neer Hollister). In 1938 Kate filed for divorce, granted in 1939, at which time the couple parted ways.

Kate and the Princelings lived with her parents in Hollister until her second marriage (a very happy one, yay!) in 1947 to James Edwin O’Brien (henceforth referred to as Edwin). Edwin bought the family a house in the post-war boomtown of Richmond, CA to be near the Shipyards where he was a peace-time captain for Standard Oil. [Read more…]
